Following an encounter with the Pharisees regarding Jesus disciples picking heads of grain on the Sabbath and eating them…Jesus now enters the synagogue. (Matthew 12:9)
A man with a shriveled hand was there. The religious leaders asked Jesus, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath.” Jesus gives the example of a sheep falling in a pit and that any of them would surely lift it out. Aren’t people much more valuable than a sheep. Then, instead of debating the merits of his argument any further, Jesus had the man stretch out his hand and Jesus completely restored it.
TO THINK ABOUT:
1. When are you more likely to discuss or debate theology rather than actually serve with love?
2. How was Jesus’ inspiring role of a servant different from the Pharisees aspiring role as leaders?
“How much more valuable is a person than a sheep! Therefore, it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.” Matthew 12:12
